A large subset of Stuart Woods' books feature the retired policeman, lawyer, lover, and general fixer Stone Barrington. They're light, and don't reach the level of the greats in the genre (Conan Doyle, Rex Stout, Dorothy Sayers, John D. MacDonald, say), but the prose is fit for purpose and the characters have some life in them. Every now and then the story doesn't even take the expected course.
